What do the Kardashians and tech nerds have in common?

APIs.

No, really!

The Kardashian Kollection and Sears API are BFFs (best friends forever) as the app leverages the Sears Product Search API.

Once a user clicks on a Kardashian Kollection product category, the Sears Product Search API is invoked to get all of the products associated with that category. Categories include: denim, handbags, jewelry, shoes, hosiery/initimates, sunglasses and women's.

One of my favorite things about working on the API Product Management team is seeing all of the amazing products and apps that the Sears Developer Network builds using the Sears Open API Platform.

Since launching the Sears Developer Network and the Sears Open API Platform in 2010, we haven't particularly done a good job in showcasing your work.  That's why, here at the start of 2012, we've made the commitment to do our best to highlight the achievements and contributions of our developer community.

We're excited to start the year off with a BANG with one of our very own!

Just a few weeks ago, our very own Sears Mobile team earned not one, but TWO of the highest accolades and most prestigious awards in mobile commerce: 2011 Mobile Retailer of the Year and 2011 Mobile Commerce Website of the Year.

Check out the wonderful words Mobile Commerce Daily had to say about these two fantastic honors:

Mobile Commerce Daily is convinced that Sears serves as a role model for retailers for its outstanding use of mobile. The Mobile Retailer of the Year is the most prestigious honor for smart, strategic and creative use of the mobile medium. Target won the honor in 2010 and eBay won in 2009.

“Sears gets that mobile commerce is not about the channel, but about the customer,” said Mickey Alam Khan, editor in chief of Mobile Marketer and Mobile Commerce Daily, New York. “Today’s store is not just doors, shelves and escalators, but keypads, local search and appealing product display on screens, and Sears’ mobile strategy is completely reflective of how control of shopping has shifted to the customer.

“Through its 360-degree use of mobile to support not only that medium but stores and online, Sears has shown a level of maturity rare among the nation’s leading retailers,” he said. “Sears’ mobile presence is making it easier to shop with the brand, and thus prepare the retailer for 21st century retailing and marketing.”

Sears saw double-digit growth in mobile sales during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and had the highest-ranking mobile commerce sites for Black Friday, according to the Compuware Gomez Performance Satisfaction Index.

Why are we so excited?

Sears Mobile consumes our Product Search APIProduct Details APIStore Locator API and several of our 150 internal-facing APIs that are exposed for consumption by Sears and select partners.

Why should you be excited?

We want you to use our data and Open API Platform to build your own mobile apps or any other experience your heart desires.  Our public facing APIs are available for anyone in the SDN community to use, but if you are an active Sears Open API Platform user and want to take it to the next level with some of our internal-facing APIs, let's talk: @SearsAPI or philip.nowak@searshc.com.

Sears has a Developer Network and Open API Platform?  Yes we do!  We've had one for almost two years now, after originally launching the Sears Developer Network and the Sears Open API Platform in February of 2010

At 125 years old, Sears might be one of the oldest retailers in the country, but we're all in on driving technological innovation through eCommerce, mobile commerce and social commerce.

This might be the reason we raised some eyebrows and quickly sparked some interest in the Sears Developer Network and the Sears Open API Platform when we launched our new @SearsAPI Twitter account.  Here are some of the fun tweets that came across our Twitter stream:

We originally launched with two APIs: Product Search and Product Details.  We now have 6 public-facing APIs that developers can consume for their applications in xml/json response format:

1.      Product Search: search and browse products within sears.com, kmart.com and mygofer.com catalogs

2.      Product Details: retrieve product details from sears.com, kmart.com and mygofer.com catalogs

3.      Store Locator: retrieve Sears or Kmart store locations near an address given as input

4.      Deal of the Day: retrieve the mygofer.com Deal of the Day

5.      Top Sellers: retrieve top seller products from sears.com, kmart.com and mygofer.com catalogs

6.      Sales and Deals: retrieve sales and deals data from sears.com, kmart.com and mygofer.com catalogs

We also have over 150 internal-facing APIs that are exposed for consumption by select partners and power applications from our mobile team, Sears.com, Kmart.com and MyGofer.com.

Not satisfied with the APIs we've made available to all registered users in our Sears Developer Network?  Tell us what you're looking for in our first ever Sears API Developer Network Survey, tweet us @SearsAPI or email at philip.nowak@searshc.com.

Already build something really cool using our APIs and want to share it with the SDN community?  You're in luck as we're looking for products and apps to feature in our Developer Showcase series here on the SDN blog.  Drop us a tweet at @SearsAPI or email at philip.nowak@searshc.com.

As I mentioned in my first post as the new Sears API Product Manager, I’m here to help you build cool and interesting things using the Sears Open API Platform.

We want to hear from you about what we can do better, whether you want access to more API interfaces, better documentation, faster support, FAQs, tutorials, news, example code or examples of the cool products others are building in-house or outside of SHC (Sears Holdings Corporation).

How are we doing that?

Our first ever survey, the 2012 Sears API Developer Network Survey.

It's not painful like most surveys out there.  Almost all of the questions are multiple choice and additional comments are optional.

But here's the thing, while we're grateful for any feedback we receive from you, your comments are valuable to us, like little gold nuggets of insight.   Your feedback will help us evolve our product roadmap, so that we can address the most pertinent issues as soon as we can.

Are you in?

Let's sweeten the deal a little bit.  We're giving away a $50 Sears gift card to a random winner.

The catch?

You have to complete the whole survey AND fill out your contact information at the end including name, email address and developer API key.

Are you in now?

Let's do this:  2012 Sears API Developer Network Survey

If you'd rather forego the chance to win the gift card and instead submit the survey anonymously, just leave the contact info fields on the last page blank and hit submit.

One more thing, if you haven't already noticed, we're ramping up our blog posts, so be sure to subscribe by:

Philip-Nowak

Hi there, I’m Philip Nowak, the new product manager for the Sears Open API Platform.  I’m also the de facto community manager for the Sears Developer Network and chief evangelist for our suite of APIs.

What does that all mean?  I work for all of you, the developers.

I’m here to help you build cool and interesting things using the Sears Open API Platform.  But in order to do that, I need to hear from you first.  That’s why my first order of business was to put together our first ever survey, the 2012 Sears API Developer Network Survey.

I need to hear from you what we can do better, whether you want access to more API interfaces, better documentation, faster support, FAQs, tutorials, news, example code or examples of the cool products others are building in-house or outside of SHC (Sears Holdings Corporation).

Once we hear from you, we’ll make sure to incorporate your feedback into our product roadmap and address the most pertinent issues as soon as we can.

Look for the survey tomorrow by email and here on the SDN blog.

I look forward to meeting all of you here on the SDN in due time, but in the meantime, say hi in the comments or shoot me a message on any of the mediums listed below.

-Philip

This year, we have seen our latest innovation, mygofer.com, expand considerably. mygofer.com seeks to provide convenience in shopping. Order from a wide assortment of products from groceries to consumer electronics and pick up your order at your local Kmart or have it delivered to you same-day.

If you are a retail business developer seeking to expand your geographic reach or if you want to enable your eCommerce site with store-pickup then we have the perfect solution for you!

We are offering delivery services and store-pickup through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Originally developed for our internal use, these APIs expose our logistics and expertise in multi-channel integration for your use. Schedule same-day delivery or a specific time window delivery; Schedule delivery to home or to an organization. All of these options are available as APIs. You tell us “Beam the items up, mygofer” and we pick-up the items from Location A and drop them off at Location B.

Using these APIs, you can seamlessly integrate delivery services into different types of retail eCommerce applications from smart mobile applications for iPhone or Android phones to eCommerce websites. The delivery service allows you to offer to your customers the convenience of shopping online and the no hassle fulfillment of having their order delivered to them at home or office at the time of their choosing. Additionally, using our APIs, you can enable store pickups in your existing brick and mortar stores.

Using both sets of APIs, you can expand the geographic reach of your retail offerings and offer your customers convenience, therefore increasing customer satisfaction. RESTful APIs with output in JSON or XML allows you to use it with your favorite language – Java, Perl, Ruby on Rails, PHP or another.

For use in your application, have your use-case ready and contact us

If you know about apps, then you know about mobile. Mobile apps are everywhere from your iPhone, Droid, and now the iPad. Mobile apps have changed the way consumers can access information while on the go and it's starting to change the way we buy.

Using traditional web browser, consumers can easily price compare by opening several Web browsers or simply visiting price comparing sites that would do it for you (there's now even Kayak, which allows you to acess all flight and travel information to find the best prices at your fingertips). With mobile apps, e-commerce has taken an interesting turn as people can now price compare while they shop. You can be in a store looking at lawnmowers and pull up an app on your Droid and voila! You've found a cheaper price right there - and you can either see if teh store will match the price, or you can order from your phone and your lawnmower will be on its way.

According to Coda Research, mobile e-commerce revenues in the states will reach $23.8 billion in 2015, which is 8.5% of U.S. total e-commerce revenues. Clearly, this is changing the way people do business and shop. At Sears, we see this as an opportunity to work with developers to use our APIs in innovative ways so we can be wherever our customers are and help them more easily shop in a smart, informed way.

Having released several of our Sears APIs already, now comes the exciting part: we're looking forward to seeing what sorts of mashups will be built. It's an exciting time right now in which the API economy is changing the way retailers do business, and it'll be cool to see the mashups that come from the Sears APIs.

ProgrammableWeb has been a great source for finding cool APIs and even cooler mashups in the e-commerce and retail space and beyond. Here are a few that I've found and think are changing the ways we think about apps and doing business:

PetStew.com is a fun mashup that's using a variety of APIs. Technically it's in the e-commerce space, though it's more than just retail as it helps you find both dogs for sale and dogs up for adoption. Regardless of how you categorize this one, it's a pretty robust mashup using APIs such as Amazon eCommerce, Flickr, Google Maps, Oodle, Twitter and YouTube, among others.

There's a really simple but amazingly helpful mashup called Nicksmap, which uses the Google Maps API against Craigslist listings to make it easier to find apartments for rent based on location.

For retailers there's a recent mashup called Cloud Conversion for eCommerce, which uses APIs from Amazon eCommerce, eBay and Salesforce.com. This mashup gives online retailers the tools and ability to easily streamline and manage their customer service and support with the Salesforce.com Service Cloud.

These are just a few that have been posted in the last week or two... and there are MANY more out there. I am curious to know what mashups you have made using Sears APIs and what are your recent or all-time favorite mashups you've come across?

If you've been reading here, you'll know we've been releasing new Sears APIs for developers over the past few weeks. I'm really interested in how developers are innovating business with retail APIs like ours and the changing face of e-commerce.

Brendan Gibbons from Practical eCommerce recently wrote about visual search as it pertains to mobile commerce.  More and more, we've seen retail's move to mobile as consumers are increasingly interacting with products in new ways via new channels. At Sears, we've mobile shopping applications like Sears2go and Kmart2go that allow customers to search, browse and buy products from their phones.

Visual search could really be a valuable tool that I can see taking off in the mobile space - as Gibbons notes, "This technology is useful for mobile users who are on the go and seeking certain qualities in a product without knowing or caring about the brand name. For example, someone with an iPhone could see a shirt in a store and want to search for shirts with similar aesthetics. “  Google is already doing some visual search with Google Goggle which allows Android mobile phone users to search using images.

Let us know your thoughts and what applications you are planning to build using the APIs! We're excited to build out the blog content and engage with Sears API developers.
